THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME
by Mark Haddon

This is one of the more original books I’ve ever read. It is a story told from the point of view of a brilliant but autistic adolescent. Literature’s job is to approximate life in interesting and meaninful ways, allow us to glimpse minds and hearts different from our own. This book does that. No reader of this book will ever think about autisum in quite the same way. This is a quick but worthwhile read..

SKELETONS AT THE FEAST
by Chris Bohjalian

This is an absorbing novel that takes place at the end of World War II. As the German army disintegrates and the Russians sweep across Poland and Germany, innocent victims are caught in the middle. This novel contains three story lines (that ultimately merge) of victims trying to survive in cruel, dangerous and chaotic environments. This is a story about the failings of human nature and the triumphs of the human spirit.
