What Models Do That Theories Can’t

Abstract: Sometimes,
the explanations we are looking for cannot be derived directly from
the theories we have. Then
we create models to fill the gap between the general statements
constituting our theories and the empirical facts, which are to
be explained. This presentation deals with the question
of exactly how models play the role of mediators between theories
and empirical data.
