Definition of Form Data
Form data are those terms and phrases that designate specific kinds or genres of materials. Materials designated with these terms or phrases may be determined by an examination of:
their physical character (e.g., videocassettes, photographs, maps, broadsides)
the particular type of data that they contain (e.g., bibliographies, questionnaires, statistics)
the arrangement of information within them (e.g., diaries, outlines, indexes)
the style, technique, purpose, or intended audience (e.g., drama, romances, cartoons, commercials, popular works)
or a combination of the above (e.g., scores)
A single term may be modified by other terms, in which case the whole phrase is considered to be form data (e.g., aerial photographs, French dictionaries, conversation and phrase books, wind ensemble suites, telephone directories, vellum bound books, science fiction).
(This is a ‘generic’ definition, not just one for LC Subject Headings)

Computer-assisted instruction
Computer network resources
Electronic information resources
History and criticism (any Historical subdivision)
Study and teaching--Activity programs

One of the problems with these authority records is that catalogers are using them as main headings even when they are coded as not appropriate for use as headings

New Authority Records:
FORM SUBDIVISION
THIS IS “DOUBLE CODED”. BOTH THE 185 TAG AND THE SUBFIELD V INDICATE THAT THIS IS A FORM SUBDIVISION
This authority record is validating the use of Amateurs’ manuals in a string like:
650 0 Dwellings |x Maintenance and repair |v Amateurs’ manuals.
This is a also “double coded” for topic, validating use like:
650 0 English language |x Textbooks.

There will be two authority
records for subdivisions that can
be both topical and form
680 |i Use under subjects for periodicals on those subjects
680 |i Use under subjects for works on periodicals about those subjects

Questions received prior to the session
Identification?
This subdivision is used as a form subdivision for the pattern headings of
plants (SCM H 1180) and animals (H 1147) and types of objects. Usage under groups of people
(like learning disabled children) is topical. The reason for this difference is that identification of plants
and animals is used for a distinct "form" of materials, i.e., identification guides like guides to wildflowers
with pictures and descriptions. LC is considering changing the term for the usage as a form.
Dissertations?
Now that form subdivisions are allowed, there was a
request for usage of the subdivision "Dissertations" for actual dissertations.
A straw vote at the session showed overwhelming support for such a form
subdivision. There were comments that the subdivision should include theses and other papers
for degrees so the suggestion was made for |v Dissertations, theses, etc.
If something is both form and topical, do we repeat the subject string to bring out both aspects?
Certainly there are pros and cons but Mary Charles presented her personal preference. "Because
of the redundancy of fields in the MARC format already, until we can "use" the different subfield
coding with better displays or smarter search methods, pick the "most appropriate" of the two
coding strings... and don't make the redundancy problem worse."

Change your existing bibliographic records?
NOT YET… We can’t hit a moving target.
Do Ask Questions
Ask LC when practice is “strange”
Locally ask:
Can you make global changes? If so, can you specify a location in the string of headings?
Can your system distinguish between v and x subdivisions? For display? For Indexing?
Do you want to distinguish them yet?
How much harm will you do if you change “globally” the x’s to v’s? Any more than you
did when you changed Crime and criminals to Crime or Criminals or?
16 of 17
YOU ARE ALREADY DOING THE INTELLECTUAL WORK OF ASSIGNING FORM,
NOW YOU HAVE THE TOOL (V) TO DESIGNATE IT
MOST FORM SUBDIVISIONS ARE AT THE END OF THE STRING
BUT… CODE THE SUBDIVISION BASED ON ITS FUNCTION,
NOT ITS POSITION
USUALLY IF A FORM SUBDIVISION FOLLOWS, THE PREVIOUS SUBDIVISION
WILL BE CODED X FOR TOPICAL
AUTHORITY RECORDS ARE BEING MADE AVAILABLE AND CODING IS
BEING ADDED TO LC DOCUMENTATION… MAKING THIS CHANGE EASIER TO IMPLEMENT
