Slide 2 of 28

Notes:

Imagine the year is 1455. You are a monk who is responsible for the manuscripts in the library of your monastery. Over the last 10 years you have copied perhaps 200 manuscripts and have illuminated their margins with beautiful illustrations. You have just learned about the invention of the printing press. With it, 200 copies of a manuscript can be printed in less than a week. Imagine your feelings.

Now imagine that the year is 2000. You are a cataloger in a medium-sized library. You have spent the last 10 years building a catalog containing records representing the collection of the library for which you work. You have just learned that the library director is being told that a local catalog is no longer necessary – other means such as Amazon.com and OCLC’s WorldCat will be accessed instead. Same feelings?
