Gila National Forest

 

Location:    Truth or Consequences, New Mexico


Site Leaders:    Aaron Fellows and Siobhán Girling


Organization's Mission:    To create an appreciation for the world's first designated wilderness area through first hand experience in rehabilitating and renovating the forest's trails.


Nature of the Work   Team-oriented work focusing on the clean up of run-down trails. This work includes removal of natural debris, erosion control, and also some physically challenging work.


Transportation:    Commercial airline, approximately 3 hours.


Accommodations:    Camping supplies will be provided upon arrival. Meals will be prepared as a group.


Possible Activities:    Hiking, rafting, other outdoor activities at group discretion.

Cost:    $290 per person*


Duration of the trip:    Tentative plans are to leave Pittsburgh Saturday, March 2 and return on Sunday, March 10


Special Considerations:    We will be working at elevations over 8000 ft; no bathroom accommodations/showers; variable temperatures; strenuous work.  Tetanus must be current before volunteering at the project site.  Fundraising will reduce cost.


    * Program cost includes Student Government Board’s funding.  Cost may fluctuate based on airfare.
