Special Programs

These programs are great for soldiers already in the Active Army/Army Reserve and National Guard or wishing to be a part of the Army Reserve or National Guard to receive extra benefits to attend college, receive a degree and become commissioned officers.

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)

Another way to get a head start on your future is through the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP), a volunteer officer training program that allows Army National Guard and Army Reserve enlisted members to participate in the Advanced ROTC Program. The intent of the SMP Program is to increase officer accessions into the Reserve Components (RC) by increasing ROTC enrollment from enlisted RC members who are attending college. Upon completion of Basic Training, an RC soldier who is an academic junior can join the Advanced ROTC Program and earn a commission as an officer in the U.S. Army upon completing their college degree. In addition, contracted non-scholarship cadets and RFD scholarship cadets can join a RC unit and the SMP. Advanced Course ROTC SMP students are paid for their Guard/Reserve training and receive the ROTC allowance of $350.00 per month as a junior and $400.00 per month as a senior as well as $600.00 per year for books. Upon completing the ROTC program, the United States Army Officer agrees to an eight-year obligation, which can be served in the Reserve Forces, on Active Duty or a combination of the two.

Upon completing the program, they can earn baccalaureate degrees and commissions as second lieutenants. Four, three and two-year scholarships are available, as well as a two year non-scholarship option.

Guaranteed Reserve Force

Need Help Financing your College Education?

Apply for a Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Army ROTC Scholarship! (RFD)

The Army ROTC program provides college trained officers for the Army National Guard (ARNG) and the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR). The Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) Scholarship is one of two programs directed by law that must have scholarships awarded yearly.

The program provides scholarship opportunities to college students who will be juniors in the fall of the year the scholarship is awarded. The two-year scholarships available in the GRFD program require recipients to be in either a National Guard or Reserve Unit. GRFD scholarship winners also have the option to request active duty during the accession process.

Army Reserve and dedicated Army National Guard scholarship cadets, in addition to their normal college degree requirements, take military science courses, participate in scheduled leadership laboratories, attend the 5-week ROTC Advanced Leadership Camp, and are members of an ARNG or USAR unit.

Applications are sent by the school to Headquarters, Cadet Command. The applications are then forwarded to the appropriate State Adjutant General (AG) for Army National Guard applicants and to the Regional Support Commander (RSC) for United States Army Reserve applicants.

The U.S. Army ROTC RFD and Dedicated Army National Guard scholarships provide financial assistance toward college tuition and education fees of up to $17,000 annually. Additionally, a flat rate of $300 per semester is provided to purchase textbooks, classroom supplies and equipment. Army ROTC Scholarship winners also receive $350 per month in their junior year, ($400 for seniors) for up to ten months of each school year. You will also earn drill pay for participating in National Guard or Army Reserve training activities.

The ARNG scholarship requires an eight-year obligation served in an ARNG unit. The individual cannot request active duty.
Obligations: If selected for an Army ROTC RFD or Dedicated Army National Guard Scholarship, and you accept, you are obligated to:

Enter into an appropriate contract with the Army, which will spell out your scholarship, benefits and obligations.
Agree to serve in the ARNG/USAR for a period of 8 years.
Join the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) and participate regularly with a National Guard or Army Reserve unit.
Pursue the academic discipline (if applicable) identified in the letter that notifies you of your selection as a scholarship recipient.
Attend ROTC Advanced Camp, normally between your Junior and Senior years of college.
Accept a commission to serve on active duty or reserve duty (Army National Guard or Army Reserve) upon completion of the required academic and ROTC Courses.
