Our Semester at Sea® Site

Not-So New News Flashes:

A bottle was found by a man named Howard Merkel with a message from Jonathan Kennedy, Jeffrey R.A. Kirkpatrick, Jordan Beard, Kelly Berkle, Meghan Murphy, and Molly Petrie from our voyage! More information will be posted here as details become available. The discussion was diverted from private email to the MSN site.
The SS Universe Explorer, which was created as the BRASIL in 1958, has been scrapped! See the ship at the following web sites:
- The ssMaritime's "Universe Explorer" page (note: a couple of my photos from this site seem to have been "adopted" by ssMaritime!)
- Escola Americana's Moore-McCormack page
- Moore-McCormack's SS Brazil page.
- Another site has some history on this ship as well as its predecessor, the Atlantic. The Atlantic was built in 1953 in Chester, PA. See the Cruising the Past site, on the page for the Atlantic.
The Institute for Shipboard Education has unfortunately moved away from Pittsburgh and is now with University of Virginia.

Our Blog

I now realize this was a blog (although not an interactive one) before the term was invented. I previously called it an "illustrated journal," built and uploaded during the Voyage, with over 500 pictures of our trip during the Fall Semester, 1999

Well, we're home now. What a trip! If any of you is considering this trip, but aren't sure if it is worth it, put your worries aside. This was a trip of a lifetime! Please feel free to rejoin my regular web page in progress at www.pitt.edu/~galletta

On March 28, 2002, I received the following fortune at a Lulu's Noodle House. Yes, I agree!

Note: If you went on this trip and your face is clearly visible in any photo, please e-mail me at galletta@katz.pitt.edu and I will include your name. Toward the beginning I didn't appreciate the importance of including names, and in the end it was difficult to collect this information for all the shots I had already taken. Please contact me if yours is misspelled, too! Also, I'd like to use some of Sam Ngo's words I found on his site: "Feel free to use any pictures you like in my website. However, please give me credit [and] drop a line saying that you're doing so."

How to survive the foreign language keyboards!
You can get some detail about the ship from the World Explorer Cruises website. Their layout of the ship provides a view of room layouts on each deck with links to more detailed drawings with room numbers. If that doesn't work try this link. If you are a faculty or staff member with a family, chances are you'll be placed on the Sun Deck in this area (if it doesn't work try this link). We were in room 209. Are you going on this trip? Here's some advice for everyone, and for advice for faculty in particular. See various sites in the Web Ring for a huge repository of advice.
How did I get "Dock Time?" Dock time is a penalty whereby you must stay on the ship for a couple of hours while others are allowed to get off at a port.
A site called StudyAbroadDomain.com has a page about various sea programs. It seems that others have very similar names to our beloved program. Speaking of which, my final link:
