New research on political change in the community of Suta in the Muisca area of Colombia between the 11th and 17th centuries. The archaeological evidence from household artifact assemblages suggests that social hierarchy was characterized by minimal differences between commoners and elites. Social hierarchy emerged from a non-negotiated process in which elites did not control the activities of households in the community, allowing for the expression of varied strategies, limited primarily by environmental, economic, and cultural factors.
