El Códice Colombino (CD-ROM)

by Manuel A. Hermann Lejarazu

The Códice Colombino is the only example of a prehispanic codex conserved in Mexico since most of the Mixtecan manuscripts left Mesoamerican territory very early in the colonial period. The case of this document is a very special one because it remained in the hands of the caciques of Tututepec during colonial times and up until the mid-19th century. Later the codex was acquired by the so-called Junta Colombina de Mexico, a scientific association founded by Porfirio Díaz to commemorate in 1892 the 4th century of the discovery of the Americas. At present, the codex rests in the Acervo de Documentos Pictográficos at the Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City. The contents of the codex are historical, about the life of a ruler, Señor Venado 8, Jaguar Paw. This CD-ROM is accompanied by a booklet explaining the history of the codex, as well as summarizing the contents. In Spanish.
