Las Cronologías del Formativo: 50 años de investigaciones japonesas en perspectiva

by Peter Kaulicke

In 1958 the First Scientific Expedition of the University of Tokyo to the Andes arrived in Peru. The Japanese group of researchers consisted of archaeologists, ethnologists, anthropologists, geographers, historians, and other specialists who started the more than half century of studies and scientific cooperation aimed at producing knowledge related to the culture and history of Peru. They focused on the study of the Formative Period which encompasses the 2000 years before the Christian era, from the appearance of Andean agriculturalists to the emergence of the great ceremonial centers linked to Chavín culture. In this volume, Yoshio Onuki, one of the original members of the expedition, writes a foreword providing relevant details, while Peter Kaulicke presents a review of the state of research on the Formative. His analysis includes a review of work carried out by different specialists who have dealt with the Formative in the Peruvian Andes, his own theoretical proposals, and the material evidence obtained in his fieldwork.
