Comet Tempel 1

 

This is a photo of Tempel 1 just after the impact. The bright flash is material blasted from the crater, which ended up being about 200 m in diameter and 30-50 meters deep.

The Deep Impact spetrometer detected a variety of compounds, including various rocky minerals (silicates, carbonates, and a type of clay called smectite), metal sulfides (like pyrite), amorphous carbon, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (complex organic compounds that, among other things, may have been instrumental in helping to build RNA molecules on a pre-biotic Earth).
