Directions: Staple this as a cover sheet for homework 1.
1. Creating a plan. (10 points = 5 + 5)
a) Start a UNIX session. Use the finger command to list information about yourself. For example, see mine above. Capture this window to the clipboard, then paste it in Word.
b) A "plan" consist of additional information about you that is displayed when someone fingers you (pardon this expression). A plan is stored in a file called
.plan (yes the name of this file begins with a period). In fact, y our signature is stored in a file called .signature. These files are referred to as the dot-files. To see the dot-files, use the command ls -A.Use pico to create a
.plan file for yourself then finger yourself again. Look at mine above. Capture this window to the clipboard, then paste it in Word.
2. Creating folders and shortcuts. (10 points = 5 + 3 + 2)
a) Start with a freshly formatted diskette. Create the directory structure shown in the diagram below on your diskette.
b) From the Start Button, choose
Programs | Command Prompt (do your see the MS-DOS window). Type the command tree a: to display the directory structure of your diskette. If you created everything correctly you will see the same as the window below.Capture this window to the clipboard, then paste it in Word.
S Print a copy for me.c) In addition, create a shortcut inside the folder Bottom1 that links to Middle2. Capture Bottom1's window to the clipboard (see below), then paste it in Word.
3. CardFile. (10 points = 7 picture + 3 text)
Using CardFile and Paintbrush, create a card for a knight of olde (for example, Sir Lancelot is shown above).
4. FTP and word processing. (20 points = 5 download + 15 formatting)
