Carol J. Mulvihill, R.N., C. is the Director of Health Services at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, a position which she has held since 1974. Pitt-Bradford is Pennsylvania's public liberal arts college. The lovely rural campus, located near the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania, has 1,200 enrolled students, 500 of whom live in apartment-style housing on campus.
As part of her innovative work as the Director of the Health Service, Carol implemented a Self-Care Center for Colds in 1977, developed a Self-Care for Cuts in 1978, and opened a Self-Care for Upset Stomach in 1993. The Self-Care programs at Pitt-Bradford have become models for other colleges nationwide.
Carol was named a Fellow of the American College Health Association in 1992. There are currently 141 ACHA Fellows nationwide. During the 1980's, she was the first nurse in the history of the American College Health Association (ACHA) to serve four consecutive years on the Board of Directors. She is a former Speaker of the Council of Delegates, a position which she held for four years. She was recipient of the E. Dean Lovett Award of ACHA in 1992, and the Ruth E. Boynton Award in 1987. In 1981 she received an award for distinguished service to the ACHA for her role in achieving accreditation for ACHA as a provider and an approver of continuing education programs for nurses. Through her years of involvement in ACHA, Carol has been a program presenter at ten ACHA annual meetings, and has served on a variety of committees and task forces. She served as Chair of the ACHA Fellows Committee from 1998-2000, and served on the Benchmarking Workgroup in 1998. She also serves on the Web Page Committee of the Mid-Atlantic College Health Association.
An advocate for college health nurses, particularly those who work in small health services, Carol has been an editor of Connections Quarterly for College Health Nurses (CQ) since 1987, and became Editor-in-Chief in January 1992.
A hallmark accomplishment was the creation of a homepage on the World Wide Web in August 1996, enabling her to publish Connections Quarterly on the World Wide Web where readers can have free and continuous access to the articles on the web site! Her web pages also include information links about the Student Health Service at the University of Pittsburgh/Bradford, information about creating web pages in HTML, and health information links for college health pertinent to students and professionals alike.
On a personal note:
Carol loves elk, rural Pennsylvania, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, birds, sunsets, and the Gulf coast of Florida. She likes listening to the music of John Tesh. She enjoys flea markets, thrift shops, auctions, bargain shopping, and Thai food. Carol and her husband Michael have lived in a rustic stone house in Bradford, PA since 1973. She enjoys flower gardening and frequent drives to Benezette, PA (65 miles from Bradford) to watch and photograph the largest elk herd (approximately 640 head) east of the Mississippi.
Being Editor of Connections Quarterly is a work she truly enjoys.
