About the Elk Watcher
Proud of her Pennsylvania heritage, Carol Mulvihill is a lifelong state
resident with a keen interest in the Pennsylvania elk herd. She explains
how that interest developed:
"A trip to Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton National Park in
Wyoming in the summer of 1999 expanded my perspective and appreciation of
wildlife and the importance of habitat land in America. I returned from
that trip with a renewed appreciation of the elk we have right here in the
beautiful forests of Pennsylvania, and a realization that our elk are
second to none. My enthusiastic interest in our elk herd rose to new
heights, and hasn't subsided since. I realized how blessed we are to have
these huge, magnificent creatures inhabiting our forests. And I am happy
and thankful to be living in rural Pennsylvania, just 65 miles north of
the elk range!"
Carol believes
that the elk are one of Pennsylvania's greatest treasures. She enjoys
reading about elk,
talking to people about elk and sharing her wonderful photos. She
lives with her husband Mike in a rustic stone house in Bradford,
Pennsylvania, 65 miles from Benezette elk country. Numerous weekend drives
to see the elk during the first two hours of
daylight or two hours before dusk have yielded some
breathtaking elk sightings, several magnificent photographs,
and wonderful conversations with tourists, campers, and photographers in
search of the elk.
She has published a book, Elk Watching in
Pennsylvania, a 6" x 9" paperpack with a full color cover and 144
pages, including 51 photographs (32 color and 19 b/w).
Carol Mulvihill was the Director of Student
Health Services at the University
of Pittsburgh at Bradford for 29 years and continues to work part-time
in the Student Health Service. She was editor of Connections
Quarterly, a web-based publication for college health nurses, from
1991 to 2001. She is a fellow of the American College Health Association.
She is pursuing her interests in free-lance writing and photography.
