


Dr. Bernier's research examines the impact of a home-based
rehabilitation program which includes exercise, patient education, and behavioral interventions to improve perceptions of self efficacy
for managing illness, exercise adherence, functional ability, and mood state in persons with COPD. The behavioral intervention is
based upon the cognitive social learning theory of Bandura. Patient education is provided through printed education materials (PEMS)
which were created using the Bernier Instructional Design Scale (BIDS) (1993).

Dr. Bernier received her B.S. from the University of Florida, her M.S.N. from Case-Western Reserve University, and her Ph. D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
