dowg
Not a day goes by in the University of Pittsburgh that I hear the word dowg frequently used.  Day after day, this word is constantly used not only for describing how the day has been but also to greet a friend.

Hey dowg, how ya doin?.  Often times I find myself reacting this very way in order to approach a familiar face which I come to recognize in a crowd of nothingness.  Dowg is a word which has evolved over time in describing a friend or a companion which deserves to be called a friend.  Once known to resemble a human male which covets woman as an item, now describes a buddy of life and friendship which can evolve into a lifetime.  You got my back dowg, and I got nothing but love for you.

The word dog once originated as describing a carnivore of the dog family Canidae.  According to the Learning Network Dictionary, the word dog describes a certain type of mammal, one which is most likely found in the house of any random human being1.  Dogs are domesticated animals which are Mans Best Friend and Cats Worst Enemy.  However, these terms have dubbed the word to achieve a greater meaning, ones of which that accumulate dismal and diminutive definitions.

My dogs are really killing me!, usually refers to the pain one experiences on the feet after a hard days work.  What great achievement to the individual who invented the word dog to learn that their creation pin points foot pain after someone has worked to hard.  This definition has almost  humiliated the word all together.  Often times we hear ourselves referring to a despicable young man as a dog, or one who has no respect for the female gender.  With much thought, I realized that this meaning is very degrading, not only to the respect of the word dog, but also to the male gender himself.  Dog has dubbed men as being ferocious beings which only take females to enpregnate them and then want nothing to do with them.  There is no other meaning in the slang definition and I believe that it must be erased from the dictionary and even from our minds.

This past summer a song hit the music charts which blasted the Baha Men to number one in the United States.  Who Let the Dogs Out reached number one in America, yet it also sparked questions which support the argument of my case.  The song describes men being referred to as dogs, rambunctious young males who are treating females as if they were items of clothing, wearing them once and forgetting what they even look like.  Even with the lyrics of the song, my idea that the word dowg being the future definition seems to elevate into creater consideration.

I'm gonna tell To any girls calling them canine
Tell the dummy "Hey Man, It's part of the Party!"
You fetch a women in front and her mans behind
       Her bone runs out now

Even men themselves are referring to themselves as dogs because society has marked and dubbed this word bestowing a burden upon the three letter word itself.  Not only is the male society being hurt, but the English dictionary and vocabulary is paying a heavy price for what society has done.

According to The Rap Dictionary, dowg refers to a friend3.  There is no other debilitating meaning nor is there any reference that degrades anybody.  The word with its misspelling was created within the lyrics of Hip-Hop.  This style of music has formulated its own version of the word dog transforming it into dowg having totally different and positive meaning.  However, Hip-Hop used the word in its own spelling to disassociate it from any slang terminology linked to the original word dog.3

One word does not or could not ever own one meaning.  There is always going to be another meaning made to disrupt language in its own entirety.  When a word in the English language permits a flaw in the human nature, why must it be allowed to pursue a life without end?  Yet when a word emits only good nature and friendship, society decides they want to hide it upon the shadows, only to rear its head on the streets and ghettos where Hip-Hop was born.
