The English language is full of slang words. These words have changed over the years but slang is and always will be there. As one word goes out another one seems to come right in its place. Slang can be found everywhere, on television, at work, among friends, and even in the family scene. It is used to represent many things from parties to everyday greetings. Different groups often use different types of slang that represent them. Although there are many common slang words used between everyone. In my group of friend it seems that we cannot escape a statement with out using slang. A common word that is used is yoink. By learning the origin and slang meaning, of this ever-growing word, it may be the next to be added to standard dictionaries.
The Online Slang Dictionary written by Walter Rader defines yoink as a verb meaning to steal. This word cannot be found in the Oxford English Dictionary, which makes it hard to find its origin. Yoink is regularly used in a popular the cartoons show The Simpsons. Which can lead to the conclusion that it originated from cartoons or comics. On the website, www. Pseudodictioary.com, Andrew Fischler submitted an origin, which shows yoink has a cartoon beginning. He states Yoink- meant as a sound effect, this word is uttered when grabbing something from another person, whether they want you to or not. Bart and Homer Simpson often say yoink when they are taking something from somebody. This is said instead of the sound effect being used. This is also the way in which it is used in with my group of friends.
Yoink is used when a person is taking something from someone. One of my friends just the other day said yeah I yoinked his cd which meant that he took it. Another way that it is used is to steal the front seat of a car. When a person calls shoty (slang for the front seat) all you have to say is yoink and it is yours with out complaint. This is the legal way to steal it. When the person yoinks the seat than you have to legally give it up to them. In order to stop your seat from being yoinked you must say no yoinks. When that is said the seat cannot be taken by yoinking means. This slang term has been used in the television and is becoming more popular everyday. Its rise in popularity is just one reason why it should be added to standard dictionaries.
The Oxford English Dictionary is the complete collection of the English language, which is being added to every year. It not only includes everyday words but also many slang words from today and from the past. Yoink is not a word graced with being part of this. Since new words are always being added I believe that it should be the next. It has been used on television for years and holds its own law of legal stealing. It is steadily being used more and more and with in a few years will probably become a common slang. With these characteristics it more than deserves to be added to the highly noted and respected Oxford English Dictionary.
In our culture there are many words that have come in and out of play, but still hold a place in dictionaries. These words often come from cartoons and television shows, which can lead to the conclusion that yoink should be the next to be added. Its use in the popular television shows The Simpsons shows that it is not only used in the street talk of one group of friends. Its origin was derived from the sound effects of cartoons, and should be added to the well know OED. It will be around for many years to come and will most likely spread like the other words of our large slang language.
