Lecture Description:
This lecture will
review the current understanding of the epidemiology of injuries from road
traffic accidents. It discusses two current surveillance systems, FARS
and GES, and overviews driver and vehicle data collected from crashes in
both systems. The methods underlying crash statistics will be
presented with an emphasis on their role in influencing numerators and
denominators in road traffic injury statistics.
On completion of the
lecture, readers will be able to:
- Identify the role of injury surveillance in road traffic accidents
- Understand the descriptive factors related to road traffic accidents
- Identify potential limitations in existing data
- Understand how epidemiologic study approaches can be applied to the
investigation of injuries from road traffic accidents.
