Lab Meets:Tuesday 2:00 to 4:50 Krebs 251

All Labs meet the first week for Check-in. The first lab begins on Monday, January 14.

Laboratory Essentials:

Working safely with Chemicals with Hugh B. KarefulI, 2nd Ed.Genium, 1997.

How to Survive and Even Excel in General Chemistry Elizabeth Kean & Catherine Middlecamp, McGraw-Hill, 1994. (You purchased this for lecture!)

You will also need: goggles,  a laboratory notebook and a three-ring binder. These may be purchased at the UPJ bookstore.

You will find a scientific calculator to be indispensable.

Course Philosophy

Objectives: The purpose of this course is to:

• Provide students an opportunity to explore the principles of chemistry (learned in the lecture) in a laboratory setting.
• Provide students an opportunity to learn laboratory methods and techniques.
• learn laboratory safety rules.
• develop skill in using basic laboratory equipment and instrumentation:
• spectrophotometer
• pH meters
• digital multimeters
• Introduce students to the process of chemical experimentation and discovery.
• Introduce students to collection and analysis of laboratory data including:
• use of computerized data collection probes
• use of spreadsheets and graphical analysis software
• proper use of significant figures in calculations using experimental data
• Introduce students to the process of keeping a laboratory notebook.
• Encourage students to "think like a scientist".
