Greg Constantine: Algebra -- Group Theory
This page offers information on the graduate course in Groups, Rings, and
Fields
that I teach this academic year. The two basic books used are
Dummit and Foote's text on Algebra as well as the latest edition of
"Basic Algebra" by Knapp. Alperin
and Bell's "Groups and representations" and Serre's "Linear
representations of finite groups" are good supplements on group theory.
The former focusses mostly on abstract group theory, the latter on linear
representations. Exerpts from my own notes will be distributed to the
class.
It is useful to be acquainted with the prime
numbers, finite dimensional vector spaces over arbitrary fields, and
some basic knowledge about groups and rings, such as the
material covered in an undergraduate course on the subject.
