Grad Expo 07 - Abstract Submission Form

Deadline:  Friday, January 19, 2007

Submissions may be on any subject and applicants are encouraged to submit material that they are preparing for other conferences. Poster and paper abstracts will be selected based on the author's ability to communicate complex ideas across disciplinary boundaries. More posters (than papers) can be accepted and poster submissions are especially encouraged.  We also accept submissions for gallery space and performance time.  We are also offering the opportunity for grad students to present hands on workshops on the topics of their choice.

Prizes will be awarded for outstanding posters and papers as determined by a committee of faculty judges. First place in paper presentations and posters will receive a $500 award towards expenses for attending a conference and second place in each category will receive $300.  Art and performance pieces and the workshops will not be part of the judging.

You may submit more than one abstract, but please complete a separate application for each submission.  You may be judged on all submissions but may only be eligible for one award.

Title of Presentation

Type of Presentation

Please indicate whether your presentation is a paper or a poster, or whether you can present the material in either format.  The time available for paper presentations is limited, so you have a better chance of being accepted if you would consider presenting either a paper OR a poster.   Papers should be no more than 20 minutes long (an additional 10 minutes will be available for discussion).

We are making  some gallery space available for artistic pieces, such as paintings, photos, or sculpture to be displayed.  If there is enough interest we will also set aside some time for performances such as poetry or musical pieces.  If you would like the artistic or performance piece to be considered as part of the judging you must include with  your submission an academic analysis of the piece in the form of a paper and poster.  Finally if you would like to present a workshop, for example on a teaching technique, as part of the conference, we will work with you to secure a space, get materials  and coordinate sign-ups.

Check as many as apply, but please submit separate applications for different projects.

Abstract / Description (200 words)

Please make sure that your abstract is accessible to academics in a broad range of fields.  The Grad Expo  committee is composed of graduate students from the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities, so while it is possible that there will be someone from your discipline reviewing the abstract, it is not guaranteed.   If you are submitting an abstract that you will/have previously submitted for a conference in your field, please take a few moments to explain the significance of your research in a more general context (and to write-out any acronyms).

For art and performance pieces please include a brief description of the piece, including the length of time required or any special mounting or sound requirements that you may have.  We will do our best to accommodate you but we are somewhat limited by the venue.

For workshops, please include:  a brief description; a target audience; your room and technology requirements; and the maximum number of people that you can accommodate (which  obviously will be limited by the rooms available).

Please review you application before sending; you will NOT have an opportunity make corrections once you have submitted it.

Applications that are missing any of the above information will NOT be accepted.

If you have any questions or comments about this application please contact the A&S GSO Administrative Assistant at (412) 624-6698 or by email.
