What's new
o Dec 11: I posted info sheet for final and an old final (with solutions). The final exam's format is similar to this old final.

o Dec. 10: The final exam is in Thackeray 704, Friday Dec. 14 from 8:00-9:50 AM.

o Dec. 5: All term papers should include bibliography and citation to at least 2 references. Also state the definition(s) and theorem(s) in your paper in a format same as or similar to the sample LaTeX file (below). That is, state them clearly with a theorem/definition title.

o Dec. 5: I updated the sample LaTeX file (below) to include "bibliography" and "\cite" and "proof".

o Nov. 13: You can download WinEdt (LaTeX editor for Windows) at www.winedt.com and TeX Works (LaTeX editor for all platforms) at www.tug.org/texworks As far as I know WinEdt has a one month free trial, and TeX Works is free on Mac OSX.

o Nov. 13: Posted a sample LaTeX file for the term paper.

o Nov. 6: Information about term paper:

The term paper should be written in the style of an expository article on a mathematical topic of your choice. Here you can find a list of suggested topics , but you are not limited to that list. Your paper should be interesting and comprehensible to a reader who does not already know your topic. It must include some technical detail or proofs. It must be typed/word-processed, and should be approximately 8-10 pages in length, double spaced. All sources must be cited in the paper. Papers that include passages lifted verbatim from other sources without appropriate citations will receive a grade of F. You should submit the topic of your choice to me by Nov. 16 and preferrably earlier. The term paper should be handed in by December 7.

You are encouraged, but not required, to use LaTeX for typesetting your term paper. It is very easy to learn and use (enough to typeset a short paper). There is also lot of LaTeX material available on the web. A good online reference is The not so short introduction to LaTeX2e

o Sep. 14: Lecture notes are posted regularly.

Course info
Time of lectures: MWF 1:00PM - 1:50PM
Location of lectures: 704 Thackeray Hall

o There will be one midterm, one final exam, and weekly assignments and quizzes.

o Midterm date: will be annouced (sometime late October)

o Final grade = 30% final exam + 15% term paper + 25% midterm + 30% homework and quizzes

o The final exam is in Thackeray 704, Friday Dec. 14 from 8:00-9:50 AM.

Homework policy: You may work with other students or use library resources, but each student must write up his or her solutions independently. Copying solutions from other students will be considered cheating, and handled accordingly.
