Kernel

Master control; the part of the program which controls all computer operations

Shell

User interface window; allows a user to send commands and receive information to and from the Kernel

File System

System for storing units of information, or files; UNIX sorts files by user

Utilities

Useful programs which are part of the UNIX operating system, such as email programs, file editors, database programs
