Ceramic Forms

The data files FORM.TXT and FORM.XLS contain data on the vessel forms from excavations at El Venado. FORM.TXT is an ASCII text file; FORM.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one excavated context (for example, a level in a 1 meter square). There are 799 lines in the text file, each with 43 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that the context is not a test pit, but rather Tomb 6, and not any numbered feature. The coordinates of the context are 573.0 east-west and 273.0 north-south. No depth below surface is given for either upper or lower extreme. There is no Level number. The context produced no bell-shaped vessels, vessels with necks, everted rim bowls, bowls of all types, incurved bowls with thick rim, incurved bowls with thin rim, incurved bowls with inverted rim, or incurved bowls of all three types. It did produce 1 cup, but no ollas with high necks, low necks, no necks, or all three kinds of neck. It produced no olla-cuenco with a long rim, 1 with a short rim, none with thick or thin lips, and 1 of all four kinds. It produced no jars with everted rims, cántaros, múcaras, sppons, plates, spindle whorls, or vessel handles. There were 5 decorated sherds and 28 undecorated sherds. There were no 5 sherds with painted decoration, none with orange slip or incision. Altogether there were 33 sherds. The context dates to the Late Muisca period. There were 2 sherds identified to vessel shape. The context was assigned to residential unit LM-20. The total number of jars was 0.

The last (799th) line of the ASCII text file is:

This indicates that the context is in Test Pit 74, not a tomb or a numbered feature. The coordinates of the context are 684.0 east-west and 619.0 north-south. The depth below surface of the upper extreme is 0.20 m, and of the lower extreme is 0.30 m. It is Level 3. The context produced no sherds of any identifiable vessel form. There were 3 undecorated sherds, for a total of 3 sherds. The context dates to the Colonial period. There were no sherds identified to vessel shape. The context was not assigned to any residential unit. The total number of jars was 0.
