Soilscape Maps

The soilscapes in the three survey zones (western, central, and eastern) are provided in two GIS formats: Idrisi (Version 14--Kilimanjaro) and GEOTIFF raster files. These are compressed self-extracting files for Windows, and thus must be uncompressed on a computer running the Windows operating system. After downloading, place the files in the desired folder and double click them. Each Idrisi compressed file will produce two files with the same name and the extensions .RST and .RDC. Each GEOTIFF compressed file will produce two files with the same name and the extensions .TIF and .TFW. The cell values in the GIS files for the western survey zone are as follows:

  • 0 = Outside survey zone
  • 1 = B14 (Orthents)
  • 2 = B14 (Hapludalfs)
  • 3 = B21
  • 4 = B22
  • 5 = C1
  • 6 = C22 (Tropudults)
  • 7 = C22 (Dystropepts)
  • 8 = C23 (Tropudults)
  • 9 = C23 (Dystropepts)
  • 10 = C25
  • 11 = C26
  • 12 = D1 (Durustalfs)
  • 13 = D1 (Tropudults)
  • 14 = D2 (Dystrandepts)
  • 15 = D2 (Orthents)
  • 16 = D31 (Hapludults)
  • 17 = D31 (Inceptisols)
  • 18 = D31 (Troportents)
  • 19 = D32
  • 20 = D33
  • 21 = Swamp

Agricultural Productivity Ratings

The agricultural productivity ratings in the three survey zones (western, central, and eastern) are provided in two GIS formats: Idrisi (Version 14--Kilimanjaro) and GEOTIFF raster files.

  • 1 = Very low productivity (0.0 in Table 3.4)
  • 2 = Low productivity (1.0 in Table 3.4)
  • 3 = Moderate productivity (1.5 in Table 3.4)
  • 4 = High productivity (2.0 in Table 3.4)
  • 5 = Very high productivity (3.0 in Table 3.4)
