- Graphical objects should convey what kind of actions should be associated with them
- Example: three-dimensional buttons convey the impression that they can be acted upon (they look like they can be pushed)
- Graphical objects and controls should use consistent, self-explanatory metaphors
- Example: the filing cabinet, file folder, and document icons are excellent metaphors for disk, directory, and file
- Example: the Macintosh trash can icon clearly communicates its function to the user.
