The AMC 8 is a mathematics competition for middle
and elementary school students, designed by the Mathematical Association of
America (MAA) to promote mathematical problem-solving skills and a positive
attitude towards analytical thinking. For more information about AMC 8 and access
to the past exams, please visit the MAA AMC webpage The Department of Mathematics at the
University of Pittsburgh is an accredited host of the AMC 8 examination offering
this opportunity annually to students in the Greater Pittsburgh area. Students and parents do not register directly with the
MAA. Instead,
registration begins through our center enrollment process
described below.
Enrollment and Registration:
1.
Annual Enrollment: Each year, please
enroll the student through the Google Form linked in the second part of this
webpage. The enrollment deadline is two weeks before the exam date
at our center.
2.
Limited
Capacity: Enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis
until the center reaches capacity.
3.
MAA
Registration Link: After enrollment, a registration link from MAA will
be emailed to students who are accepted into our center.
4.
MAA
Registration Steps: Follow the instructions in the MAA
registration email to register the student for the AMC 8 exam at our center.
You will need to create a student account
on the MAA website with a username and password.
5.
Exam Fee:
There is a $20 fee per student to cover
MAA registration and competition materials.
a.
Payment should be made by check, payable
to "University of Pittsburgh."
b.
The fee is non-refundable once the registration is
completed.
c.
Please print the student’s name
on the memo line of the check.
d.

Confirmation and Reminder: Students who have paid the fee and
successfully registered with MAA will receive an email reminder one week before the exam date.
7.
Exam Format and Logistics: The AMC 8 exam at our center is the
digital version.

Please bring an iPad or laptop to take the
exam.

Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to connect
to Pitt’s guest Wi-Fi.

You may enter the building from either the front or side door. Take the
elevator to the 7th floor, Room 704 will be on your right.
Parking Information:
You may find free
street parking along O'Hara Street, Thackeray Avenue, Fifth
Avenue, University Place, and nearby streets. There are also 24-hour metered spaces
in front of and behind Thackeray Hall. Alternatively, parking is available at
the: Soldiers and Sailors Garage

Arrival, Drop-off and Pick
up:
We aim to start the exam promptly at 7:30 PM. There is a lounge adjacent to the exam room
where parents may wait during the contest. Parents may also choose to return
around 8:10 PM for student pick-up.
