FlyLab Exercise 4

Biological Sciences 355
Honors Genetics

Virtual FlyLab Exercise 4

Complete these experiments before recitation on Fri., Oct. 10.

I. Purpose: To determine the genetic behavior of the miniature-wing allele.

Cross No. 1
a) Cross miniature x wt . Record your observations.
b) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Cross No. 2
c) Cross wt x miniature . Record your observations.
d) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Analysis
e) What two conclusions can you draw about inheritance of the miniature-wing allele?

II . Purpose: To determine the genetic behavior of the sable-body allele.

Cross No. 3
a) Cross sable x wt . Record your observations.
b) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Cross No. 4
c) Cross wt x sable . Record your observations.
d) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Analysis
e) What two conclusions can you draw about inheritance of the sable-body allele?

III. To determine if the miniature-wing and sable-body alleles assort independently.

Cross No. 5
a) Cross wt x sable, miniature . Record your observations.
b) Cross F1 x P . Record your observations.
c) What conclusion can you reach about independent assortment of sable and miniature?
d) How do your conclusions relate to the inferences from experiments I and II?

IV. Purpose: To determine the genetic behavior of the bar-eye allele.

Cross No. 6
a) Cross bar x wt . Record your observations.
b) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Cross No. 7
c) Cross wt x bar . Record your observations.
d) Backcross F1 x P . Record your observations.

Analysis
e) Carefully compare your results from cross 6 to crosses 1 and 3, and cross 7 to crosses 2 and 4.
f) What two conclusions can you draw about inheritance of the bar-eye allele?
