The 2024 International Workshop on Health Informatics Education (HI-Edu 2024)
in Conjunction with the 12th IEEE International Conference on Healthcare
Informatics ICHI 2024
June 3, 2024, Orlando, FL, USA
Overview
The advancement in biotechnologies and health information technology has
created the opportunity to generate and collect digital health-related data. The
wide adoption of electronic health record (EHR) systems, smart devices, and
social media has produced enormous amounts of data. To utilize the rich data in
health care, it is an urgent need to train many qualified Health Informatics
(HI) professionals and researchers to manage, explore, analyze, and explain
the healthcare data. For that purpose, many new health informatics (HI)
education programs have been created in the last decade.
Researchers and educators also have devoted significant time and efforts
to explore the best approaches for providing high-quality HI education so
that HI graduates can overcome the challenges they face in their careers.
However, as an interdisciplinary field, there are different patterns of HI
education around the world with various challenges. Moreover, the large
amount of health data presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges
for training with hands-on experiences on real-world data to solve real-world
problems.
To shape the future of health informatics education, the 2024 International
Workshop on Health Informatics Education (HI-Edu 2024) will
provide a unique platform for close interactions
among educators, researchers, students, scholars, and industry professionals
who are interested in HI education. HI-Edu 2024 will be a one-day workshop that
consists of a keynote speech, an invited talk, podium talks, and poster
presentations.
We are calling for full papers (regular and short papers) and abstracts
on novel approaches, work in progress, and original state-of-the-art projects
in HI education activities, HI education program development, HI education research,
tools and resources for HI education, and cases studies.

short papers, and abstract for posters.
- Regular papers (8-10 pages, references not counted towards
the page limit) will describe mature ideas, where a substantial amount
of implementation, experimentation, or data collection and analysis
has been completed.
- Short papers (4-6 pages, excluding references) will describe
innovative ideas, where preliminary implementation and validation work
have been conducted.
- Abstracts (1 page, including references) will describe work in progress
and preliminary results.
Your submissions must adhere to the
IEEE Proceedings Format.
All papers will be submitted and handled through
EasyChair.
When it is time to select a Track, please choose "Health Informatics Education Workshop".
Submissions must contain the names and affiliations of authors listed

Keynote Speech , Dr. Brian E. Dixon, MPA, PhD, FACMI, FIAHSI, FAMIA, MACE, 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM (1 hour)
Title: Modernizing the Public Health Workforce: The Role and Challenge for Health Informatics Education Programs
Bio:
Dr. Dixon is a Professor at the Indiana University (IU) Richard M. Fairbanks
School of Public Health and Interim Director of the Center for Biomedical
Informatics at the Regenstrief Institute. In addition, Dr. Dixon serves as
the Director of Public Health Informatics and Research Scientist at the
Regenstrief Institute.
Dr. Dixon’s research focuses on applying informatics methods and solutions to improve population health in clinical as well as public health organizations. Leveraging large-scale clinical and administrative data, Dr. Dixon engineers solutions to optimize information and workflow, enhance surveillance of disease and injury, and improve population health outcomes. Dr. Dixon teaches informatics courses to future clinical as well as public health leaders, and he regularly mentors junior scientists in informatics, public health, and health services research. Dr. Dixon also has a part-time role as a Health Research Scientist at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs where he applies informatics to solve challenges facing care delivery to our nation’s heroes.
Dr. Dixon has published over 175 peer-reviewed articles and 25 book chapters. He is further the editor of three highly acclaimed books on clinical informatics, public health informatics, and health information exchange (which received Book of the Year from HIMSS 2017). Dr. Dixon’s work on the COVID-19 pandemic was heralded by the Governor of Indiana, AcademyHealth, and news media. Dr. Dixon was named a Research Frontiers Trailblazer by IUPUI in 2018.
