CATALOG DESCRIPTION


This course is designed to examine the structure and management of institutions of higher education and to relate these structures to human behavior in organizations, to institutional missions, traditions, values, and history, and to general theories of organization and management. Specific topics include governance, leadership, strategic planning and resource allocation, and research and policy making in higher education.

The knowledge and skills learned should be applicable to institutions of higher education throughout the world. Thus, with prior approval this course may be used for the Certificate in Latin American Studies, and the Certficate in Russian and East European Studies, in which case the focus of the student's work will be on a camparative analysis of some aspect of higher education in Latin America, or Russian and East Europe.




COURSE OBJECTIVES




This course is intended to provide the initial tools to understand and analyze the structure and administration of institutions of higher education, set within the context of generally applicable theories of organization and administration. Students should be able to:
