FA005: Introduction to Medieval Art

Paper 3- Medieval Sculpture

Below are links to 6 web pages, each contianing at least 10 different views of 6 different sculptural programs of groups of sculptures, including examples in various media, each program or group of sculptures from a different period.

Choose one program or group of sculptures. Write an essay describing the program or group of sculptures, noting such things as what the medium is; how the composition or compositions are structured; describe the iconography and say what is interesting about it; decide to what stylistic period or periods the program or group of sculptures belongs and analyse its distinguishing stylistic characteristics. Use the images to answer these questions but write a synthesized essay, rather than a image-by-image analysis.

As a conclusion, assess the contribution of the sculpture you have selected to the overall development of medieval sculpture, considering what aspects of the medium, iconography and style depend on earlier developments and which play an important role in later periods.

Write 2-3 pages.

Please note that what you hand in must be your own original work. You may discuss the paper with the TAs and your fellow classmates but you must write it yourself. Plagiarised work is not acceptable: if suspicions arise you will be asked to repeat the paper using a different set of images.

Be neat and grammatical: points will be deducted for poor quality of expression and grammar. If you need help in writing, contact the Writing Center (501 Cathedral of Learning, tel. 4-6556 for an appointment).
