Bernard R. Goldstein

Bernard R. Goldstein is University Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, Jewish Studies, History, and History & Philosophy of Science. In History of Science his teaching ranged from antiquity to the seventeenth century (including the Middle Ages); in Religious Studies he gave courses on medieval Islamic civilization; and in Jewish Studies he regularly offered courses on medieval Jewish culture (especially in Islamic countries and Spain). His research interests parallel his teaching, but the main focus has been on medieval astronomical traditions in Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin. He has co-authored, with José Chabás, a book on the astronomical tables of Abraham Zacut (late 15th century, Spain); previously, he has published extensively on the astronomical and astrological works in Hebrew by Levi ben Gerson (also known as Gersonides) who lived in southern France in the 14th century. A collection of his essays, Theory and Observation in Ancient and Medieval Astronomy, appeared in 1985.
Another set of 28 papers is available at his home page.
