In the following overview, a fundamental anatomic description of ligamentous tissue and ligament in sections shall be presented, along with scientific data describing the mechanical, structural, and viscoelastic properties of knee ligaments. Additionally, the effects of maturation, age, strain rate, and homeostatic response will be presented in the context of how each affects ligament behavior, and ultimately, ligament failure.
