Bernie Poole has been a teacher since 1966. Born and bred in England, he spent the first 15 years of his career teaching English, History, French, or English as a Foreign Language to mostly middle and high school children in England, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia. In 1980 he came to the United States where he is now a naturalized citizen. Soon after arriving in the United States, Bernie began studies in Data Processing at Westmoreland County Community College in Youngwood, PA. After completing the Associate Degree, Bernie entered the Masters Program in Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, which led, in 1983, to his appointment as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the Division of Natural Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) in Johnstown, PA.
In 1996, Bernie was invited to switch to the Division of Education and helped to establish a new department in Instructional Technology. Bernie has published several books related to Instructional Technology. The latest editions of these books are available on-line at http://www.pitt.edu/~poole/onlinebooks.htm. Bernie also has developed and maintains, with the help of his students and that of Ms. Yvonne Singer, an extensive index of web resources for teachers and students (called the EdIndex) which can be accessed at http://www.pitt.edu/~poole/edmenu.html.
On December 4 of 2006, Bernie left for India on a Fulbright Scholarship. There he lectured in Instructional Technology and related fields at Sri Padmahvati Mahila Visvavidyalayam Women's University in Tirupati, South India (about 100 miles from Chennai) and gave guest lectures at about 40 other institutions of learning--mostly universities in South India, but also at elementary and secondary schools and at homes for children with disabilities. If you'd like to read more about his experiences during his 4 to 6 month tour in India, feel free to check out his blog at http://berniepoolesfulbrighttoindia.blogspot.com/
In April/May of 2008, Bernie was a guest lecturer in Instructional Technology at the University of Tirana, Albania. If you are a signed-up member of FaceBook, you can check out his photo log there.
On his return from Albania, Bernie had the experience of a lifetime in West Virginia at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Green Bank. He found further confirmation there that he is a mere tiniest, tiniest dot on the landscape of space and time.
