Dr. Nina Girard -- nina@pitt.edu -- Secondary Mathematics Education Program Coordinator
Hello, I'm Dr. Nina Girard, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education.
This is my 19th year at UPJ. Although I am a faculty member in the
Education Division, I also teach for the Mathematics Department. I teach
both secondary education and mathematics courses, as well as supervise
student teachers. I continue to direct the UPJ Center for Math & Science
Education, which loans math and science equipment and materials to local
teachers in the schools.
I received my Bachelor's Degree (B.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Education
Mathematics, summa cum laude) from UPJ in 1987. I earned my Master's Degree
(M.S. in Applied Mathematics) from IUP in 1989. And I completed my Doctorate
Degree (Ed.D. in Mathematics Education) from the University of Pittsburgh in
2002.
My teaching and research interests include: pre-service and in-service
teacher training, the role of graphing calculators in the teaching and
learning of undergraduate mathematics, and multiple representations as a
framework for teaching and learning mathematics.
Recently, I was awarded the 2006 Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics
Education by the PA Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
