All of this, allowed me to cross the tracks. This was accomplished
by
going west and crossing the Alleghenies to Western Pennsylvania. It was
all I could have hoped for, decades later. Pheasant, grouse, woodcock,
side by side shotguns and brittanies were all there. It was February,
but
the weather was spring-like. By 9:30 the temperature was 60 degrees
although
there was still nine inches of snow on the ground. Mark, Rich and Tim
completed
the foursome. We had hunted Mr. Britts, a private club, many times
before.
It was on the edge of the Alleghenies and comprised about 3000 acres of
hills and valleys and prime pheasant cover. In fact, it was only 500
acres
smaller than all of Gardiner's Island ! Amber and Janie (my second
brittany)
were both in heat, and so we ran them sparingly. Penny and Willie and
their
handler, Bob, picked up the slack. We hunted hard, until 3:30 and had a
great time with thirteen birds in the bag. I couldn't help thinking, it
can't get any better. When I'm not out in Penn's Woods I'm able to
capture
the grandeur of the late 40's and 50's of Long Island, in the
literature
of the time, but I have come to realize that there is no wrong side of
the tracks.
