Meetings

First meeting of 2006
We discussed upcoming events for this semester. Please, take note that the first speaker, Brady Hunsaker, will be speaking this Tuesday, January 31 at 7:30. The room still needs to be verified but will more than likely be in Thackery. His speech:

Important and Fun Problems in Operations Research
Brady Hunsaker, Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering

I will present several example problems from the field of operations
research to show some of the interesting mathematical issues that
arise as well as to show their real-world importance. We will use
hands-on activities in several cases to see how common sense may or
may not help. Specific examples may include routing a delivery truck,
planning production when resources are limited, and deciding how many
checkout stations to open in a store. I'll also talk briefly about
careers in operations research.

We also discussed our first Math Club contest, which this time involves the faculty members. Since we had such an interest from faculty members about the t-shirt design contest, this time we are asking the faculty to submit a desgin. The undergraduate members of the math club will chose a winner. Faculty can submit their designs via e-mail or by sending a copy to Paul Gartside in Thackery 508 by 5:00 February 10th. The designs will be posted online at the math club website where undergraduate members will be asked to submit their votes via e-mail (you receive a point for voting.) Winner will be announced the following week.
You can enter by filling out this form.

Pi day will be approaching in March. Starting March 14 we start to vote which professor will be pied in celebration of Pi Day. There will be a container with the professor's picture on it. Members will put in their spare change throughout the following week. The professor who collects the most cash will be pied. We will have a day full of games, food, and pies. This will be Friday, March 24th (tentative). Other math related clubs are asked to join in the festivities. All professors wanting to participate should contact me. All those who want to join the Pi Committee should contact Randi at reb6@pitt.edu.

Also in March is the Integration Bee. The tentative date is March 30th (Thurs.) All those interested in signing up should contact Professor Rubin at rubin@math.pitt.edu, 412-624-6157, or Thackery 504. Information will be posted at our website as well as www.math.pitt.edu/~rubin. Those who are not interested are encouraged to go and support the other members/students.
