The concept of addiction has been created to explain why people repeatedly behave in certain ways which are usually not socially approved of. Why? Because, blaming people for their bad behaviour draws attention, not to the circumstances within which the behaviour occurs - the context, but to the person them self: an example of the Fundamental Attribution Error. To avoid this (and casting the user into the role of helpless victim) the drug itself becomes the bad element -an addictive drug. Science explains (partly) the drugs pharmacological action. This is then taken as proof and the explanation (addiction) is then seen as the cause of the bad behaviour (taking the drug).
