Shown here is our overall hypothesis as to why type 2 diabetes is so prevalent in this population. Type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japanese Americans is due to lifestyle factors reflecting �westernization� acting upon a susceptible genetic background. This leads to increased visceral adiposity and insulin resistance which in the presence of an islet beta-cell lesion results in hyperglycemia.
