Another very important milestone in diabetes epidemiology was a conference held in 1978 at the Kroc Foundation in California. It was the first major meeting on the epidemiology of diabetes. The proceedings from this conference were published in Diabetes Care in the 1979 (4). The publication holds a remarkable set of papers including the initial findings of the first ever major international diabetes epidemiology collaboration, the WHO Multinational Study on Vascular Disease (5), spearheaded by Harry Keen, John Jarrett, Kelly West and Peter Bennett. It also contains extensive debate on appropriate methodology and the foundations for the 1980 WHO Expert Committee report on Diabetes.
