The cholinesterase inhibitors include galantamine (Reminyl), donepezil (Aricept) and rivastigmine (Exelon). An earlier inhibitor was tacrine (Cognex), which is superseded by the newer compounds because of its side effects. Side effects of these 4 drugs may include diarrhea, nausea, insomnia or vivid dreams, fatigue and loss of appetite. These drugs are not a cure, yet can stabilize some symptoms of early to mid stage AD for some time.
