In 1994 though, womens health advocates pushed
for the inclusion of a reproductive health agenda beyond family planning at
a UN sponsored International Conference on Population Development. Whereas the former two meetings focused solely on family planning, the report from this third meeting advocated a more holistic approach, in which reproductive health was defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Specifically, the Program of Action advocated: Safe sex; The Capability to reproduce and the freedom to make reproductive decisions; And Education and access to safe, effective, affordable, and acceptable family planning; Lastly, it also stated that enhanced personal relations, outside of reproductive and STD care, is a part of reproductive health. |
