According
to data from national sentinel surveillance sites in 2004, the average
prevalence rate among this group is 1 per cent. Results from the 2003
epidemiological survey indicated prevalence rates of between 3.3 per
cent and 6.7 per cent at four sites.
The
proportion of sex workers not using condoms decreased from 24.5 per cent
in 2002 to 20.5 per cent in 2003, but the proportion claiming 100 per
cent condom use is only 19 per cent (an improvement from 16 per cent in
2002). In the 2003 survey, 62 percent of respondents said they used a
condom in their last commercial sex, but this figure varied from 8 to
over 90 per cent.
The
results of the epidemiological survey among sex workers showed 1.4 per
cent of these injected drugs in the past half-year, with 38 per cent of
them sharing needles. At sentinel surveillance sites, the proportion of
HIV positive sex workers who injected drugs was between 25 and 100 per
cent in Guangxi, Hunan and Chongqing.
