Instructions for Upgrading CCIC Macs to OS 8 or Completely Re-formatting a Macintosh PC

These are the instructions for the basic reconfiguration of a Maciontosh PC in the CCIC lab. This procedure is to be done on each individual PC since network settings are unique and cannot be served from the MacAdmin server. Completely re-formatting a PC is not a one-step process and should only be considered if a Mac is displaying unfixable software errors or is freezing with all extensions and control panels disabled. If you ever start up a machine and get a white floppy disk icon with a question mark on it, then that PC is a good candidate to be wiped and reformatted. Before reformatting however, make every effort to solve the probelm with the "Disk First Aid" utility on the Mac OS 8 CD (directions for starting from this PC are included in step 1) or a third party utility such as Norton Disk Doctor.

If you just wish to re-load the OS 8 operating system, then skip the first four steps of this procedure.

  1. If you need to completely wipe a PC and start over from scratch, re-start the PC with a Mac OS 8 CD in the PC's CD tray and hold down the "C" key.

  2. In the "Mac OS 8" window, double click on the "Utilities" icon and then run the "Drive Setup" utility.

  3. In the "Drive Setup" window, click once on the line representing the PC's hard drive. If this is the second time that this procedure is being tried and errors have returned, consider selecting the "Zero all data" and "Low level format" options. These options can be turned on by selecting the "Initialization Options" command under the Functions menu and clicking on both boxes in the ensuing dialog box. Otherwise, click on the "Initialize" button. Then, click the "Initialize" button again when reminded that the operation will wipe out all data on the disk. When the initialization has finished, quit from the Drive Setup utility.

  4. Rename the hard drive of the PC from "untitled" to "Hard Drive". Skip the next step.

  5. If you have skipped the first four steps and are just re-installing Mac OS 8, make sure that you save the old TCP/IP settings from the machine. A quick way to do this is to open the TCP/IP control panel. When it is open and all of the numbers are visible, select the "Configurations" option under the File menu. In the "Configurations" window, the only configuration listed should be "Default" and it should be highlighted and listed as "active." Click on the "Export" button. When prompted to a enter file name for the set of exported TCP/IP settings, click the "Desktop" button first. Then name the set "old TCP/IP settings" and click "Save." The file containing the old settings should appear somewhere on the PC's desktop.

  6. If it is not there already, insert the Mac OS 8 CD into the CD drive of the PC.

  7. On the Mac OS 8 CD window, double click on the icon for "Mac OS 8" install. Click "Continue."

  8. Make sure the "Destination Disk" on the next screen lists the name of the hard drive of the PC. Click the box next to "Perform Clean installation" so that an "X" appears there. Click the "Select" button.

  9. Click on "Continue."

  10. Click on "Continue."

  11. Click on "Agree."

  12. The next screen should feature options for Mac OS 8 options.

The ONLY items on this screen that should be selected for installation (indicated by an "X" in the block) should be "MacOS run time for Java" and "MacLink Plus."

  13. Click on the "Start" button. The installation should take anywhere from 20 minutes to a half hour and should need no more attention. When it is finished, click on the "Restart" button.

  14. When the PC has restarted, has rebuilt the desktop, and is presenting a new desktop, click "Quit" to get out of the MacOS Setup Assistant menu.

  15. Follow this step and the next step only if you have reloaded the operating system without wiping the disk. Double click on the icon for the hard drive and then open the "Previous System Folder.

  16. Move the file "HP LaserJet" from the extensions folder of the "Previous System Folder" to the new System folder (which will be named just "System Folder." The operating system will prompt you if you want to move the extension into the extensions folder of the System Folder. Click the "OK" button.

  17. Make sure that the hard drive features a folder named "Applications", a folder named "Patron Folder" and a folder named "Utilities". If these folders do not already exist, create them with the "New Folder" command under the Finder's File menu.

  18. Create a folder on the PC's desktop named "Mac OS 8."

  19. Move the following files or folders into the "Mac OS 8" folder (don't worry if the files are not there, just skip them):

  20. Move the "Mac OS 8" folder to the "Utilities" folder.

  21. On the main hard drive, move the folder "Apple Extras" to the "Utilities" folder. If prompted if you want to replace the older version, click "Yes."

  22. In the "Applications" folder move the files "Apple CD Audio Player," "Apple CD Audio Player Guide," "Apple Video Player," "Apple Video Player Guide" and "SimpleText" to the "Utilities" folder.

  23. In the "Applications" folder move the folder" Movie Player" to the "Utilities" folder.

  24. Open the folder "Apple Menu Items" in the System Folder.

  25. In "Apple Menu Items":

  26. Bring up the "Extensions Manager" control panel.

Turn off the following extensions by clicking the block next to the extension listing so that the "X" disappears (If something on this list is not in the extensions manager portfolio, do not worry about it.):

  27. Bring up the "Control Strip" control panel. "Make sure that "Hide Control Strip" is selected. Close the control panel window.

  28. Bring up the "TCP/IP" contol panel. The TCP/IP window should indicate: "Ethernet" for the "Connect via:" option and "Manually" for the "Configure" option. If this is the case, the remaining fields should all have relevant information filled in. If this is not the case (the fields are blank), then select the "Configurations" option under the File menu. If "Default" is not highlighted, then click on the line so it is. Click the Import" button and then select the "old tcp/ip settings" file that should be on the desktop. Click "Open" and then "Replace" if prompted. With all of the new information in place, you can close the window using the close box in the upper left corner. Click "Save" when prompted.

  29. You now have to re-introduce the PC to the MacAdmin server. This procedure is documented in the instruction sheet entitled Instructions for Configuring a CCIC Mac as a MacAdmin Client or Re-installing the Client Software.

  30. When the PC has finished loading all of its necessary applications and settings, obtain a "MacAdmin Disk 1998" disk, insert it, and log out of the PC's protection settings by selecting the "Logout" command under the Finder's Special menu.

  31. Select the "Desktop Pictures" control panel:

  32. You now have to recalibrate the Netscape settings. These instructions are detailed in the instruction sheet entitled Instructions for Configuring Netscape Communicator for Individual CCIC PCs.

  33. If the PC you are configuring is a PC licensed for SPSS, you have to run SPSS (with the MacAdmin protection still off) and enter the proper serial number when prompted. This number should be available in hard copy form in the server room and in a "notes" text file on the MacAdmin server PC.

  34. Restart the PC. It should be ready for general usage.
