RUNNING THE Perkin Elmer Model 1600 FT-IR
Turn on the Perkin Elmer Model 1600 FT-IR Spectrophotometer if it is
not on already. Refer to "Running the 1600 FT-IR Tutorials for New Users"
for explicit directions.
The resolution of this instrument is 4.0 cm-1.
Key conventions:

Keyboard function (hard keys) are represented by gray boxes:

Soft keys, under the screen:

Action keys (reverse video):
Running a background scan

Restore factory setup.

Press Shift, Restore keyboard function keys, followed by Setup soft key.

Press factory action key.
-
Use soft key Survey to get 1 scan; use hard key Scan to program in more
scans.
Scanning the sample gas, SO2 or HCl

Select region X to store first scan.

Use soft key Survey to get 1 scan; use hard key Scan to program in more
scans.
Analyzing the spectrum

It is good to compare the spectrum with the background to see what peaks
belong to the sample.

Display multiple scans or background by holding keys down together.

Use the 8 white hard keys in the center of the panel to massage the spectrum.

The arrow keys will expand, compress, etc.

The Shift/Peaks key is used to find the corresponding wavenumber, Shift/Mark
will mark it for plotting.

If you want to return the original spectrum use the keys on the right,
Shift/Rerange for the horizontal axis, and Shift/Rescale for the vertical
scale.
Writing comments to plot on spectra

Status key gives summary text.

Comment key allows you to write in comments like pressure, date, etc. Use
keys to type in information, Shift key for capitals.

Hit Enter key to save it.

Press X, Y, or Z to return to graphics.
Plotting the spectra

Instructions are written on the right side of the plotter.

Additional pens and a manual are in the drawer immediately below the plotter.

You should only plot the spectra you want to submit in your report, carefully
chosen to display the features of interest.
