RESEARCH PROJECTS DIRECTED
- Effect of Activated Carbon Characteristics on the Adsorption
of Phenolic Compounds
Evaluated the key characteristics of activated carbon surface
responsible for catalyzing polymerization of organic compounds
in the presence of oxygen. Evaluation included surface functional
groups (acidic and basic) and surface metal oxides.
- Mercury Control in Coal-Fired Power Plant Flue Gas
Comparison of various types of activated carbon based adsorbents
for their ability to remove mercury under process conditions
that are representative of coal-fired power plant emissions. Evaluations
included virgin activated carbon and commercially available sulfur
impregnated activated carbon. In addition, novel activated carbon-based
adsorbents were developed in this study that exhibit better thermal
stability and significantly higher capacity for mercury vapors.
- Uptake of Mercury Vapor by Activated Carbon
Evaluate the rate of elemental mercury uptake from the hazardous
waste incinerator flue gases by virgin and sulfur impregnated
activated carbon. Such kinetic comparison is needed to evaluate
the possibility of sequestering mercury emissions by powdered
activated carbon injection into the flue gas stream.
- Groundwater Quality Database for Allegheny County
Developed a GIS-based software for ground water quality monitoring
and compliance enforcement.
- Pretreatment of Industrial Wastewater by Centrifugation
Evaluated the possibility of using centrifuge for the pretreatment
of combined industrial wastewaters from a plasticizer manufacturing
facility. Optimal process parameters and operational schedule
were determined to ensure successful removal and recycling of
maximum quantities of phthalate esters.
