The Program...

The workshop involves classroom, lab and field study and includes the following topics:

  • The application of data from earth observing satellites to earth system science
  • Methods of using information technology to observe and measure regional and global environmental changes
  • Performing field and space observations.
    Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and ArcView in K-12 learning activities.
    Demonstration of interactive Internet mapping with earth science data
  • Working with indicators of global change, including demonstration and interpretation of real-time imagery on a Telonics Interactive Remote Imaging System.(TIRIS)
  • Use of satellites and air photography in understanding geology and environmental dynamics
  • On-line investigation of teacher and student resources
  • Interactive teaching on the Internet and web-based lesson development
  • Use of satellite data in weather analysis, forecasting, and atmospheric sciences, map analysis and imagery interpretation from selected storms and hurricane
  • Global warming -- greenhouse vs. enhanced greenhouse, urban heat island, hands-on laboratory practicals
  • Plenary discussion on integrating earth system science into a secondary school curriculum.
    Group writing of an Environmental Iimpact Assessment (EIA) for a specific development of Presque-Isle
