The site of San Atonio Nogalar, Tamaulipas, was discovered in 1950 by Joaquín Meade, a historian. In the early 1950s, Richard McNeish excavated a series of test pits and made surface collections. In 1967 the site was visited by the French Mission, which carried out excavations in 1968 and 1969.
