How to Order Catalog Home | edited by Brigitte Faugère The Cueva de los Portales is the only known site in north central Mexico containing preserved strata from the Archaic period. The site, located in northern Michoacán state, shows a long occupation sequence that may have started around 5200 B.C. and continued until the Spanish Conquest. The last part of the sequence suggests temporary occupation by Postclassic hunter-gatherers. The most interesting part of the sequence, however, is the time period between 5200 and 2000 B.C. which has been divided into four phases. There are floors with hearths, abundant lithics, and food remains dating to each of the four phases.
