How to Order Catalog Home | by Norma Guadalupe Peñaflores Ramírez The physical characteristics of the Sound of Campeche combined with frequent pirate attacks were the cause of numerous shipwrecks there. The resulting submerged archaeological remains on the region's sea floor carry great historical value and therefore are part of Mexico's cultural patrimony. As such, it is the responsibility of INAH's Subdirección de Arqueología Subacuática to locate these remains and preserve them for study. The purpose of this volume is not to propose a treatment for one or two of the shipwrecks reported, but rather to present a methodological approach to obtaining a general view of the historic, archaeological, and natural characteristics of this extensive marine region as guideline for future work.
